Best Shampoo for Men (It's not what you think)

By Oliver Kelly, Stylist

We are in the midst of a full-scale societal lockdown and you may be sitting at home struggling with isolation and a broken routine, hopefully relaxing, maybe drinking a little too much kombucha, trying to work remotely while starting a house-full of projects, all at once on a beer or wine diet– and damn is your head itchy! Thankfully, the latter is something you can easily take care of. Finding the right shampoo is quite simple, once you know how to shop.

Why do men seem to get by with a 3-in-1 shampoo when women need 3 separate products to achieve the same goals? It’s the same reason why your dad can go to the grocery store and expect his shampoo to balance his tires, style his hair, and exfoliate his armpits. You know the answer. His fuzzy head is itchy too and he looks like an unbalanced tire.

Many shampoos and conditioners found in the grocery store contain waxes so that your hair feels smoother when in reality it is just gathering build-up.

Everyone suffers from the same hair and scalp woes, it’s a matter of who’s motivated to do something about it. Truth be told, everyone can benefit from selecting a natural shampoo.

If you or your Dad, or partner, or brother is struggling to see the value in branching out into plant-based natural shampoo and conditioner, I’ll use my trusty car wax metaphor to explain why it’s worthwhile.

If you add on a crappy car wax spray in a drive-thru wash, it will just come off, not look shiny, add no real protection, and scratches will surely ensue. BUT, if you use a little of the good stuff, you can trust you’ll be creating a smooth surface that will maintain the integrity of the structure inside and wick off more environmental damage and dirt than before.

Good hair conditioner is like car wax, the good stuff. It smooths the cuticle of the hair (the scales that run along each hair strand) and keeps out environmental stressors and toxins while also decreasing breakage and improving shine and manageability. Basic soap simply does not do this. Want soap? Try some of our wonderful natural body washes

I typically think of hair as having as much relevance to gender as say, paint, so try approaching your routine with a couple of simple rules in mind:

  • Select good quality, non-toxic products

  • Base your choice on hair texture first, then hair and scalp issues

All of the hair care products on NVBL work as well for men as they do for women. Remember, hair has no gender. Every brand available in our online shop has been carefully selected for high quality natural ingredients that are ethically sourced and prioritize sustainability practices. Plus, every product we carry is safe for color treated hair.

There are possibilities within each brand to personalize your regimen. Reach out to us with questions, concerns, or a consultation, especially if you are new to natural hair care products. We’re here to help!
